Configuring Gmail to send using your OET email address

This procedure only applied to the gmail web client. Configuring your mobile email client or alternative workstation clients such as Outlook, Eudora or Tbird is beyond the scope of this page. Email me if you want assitance with other email clients.

What follows next is a one time configuration task.

  1. Login to the gmail web client.
  2. Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner
  3. A menu will drop down under the gear. Click on "Mail Settings" in that drop down menu.
  4. Click on the third tab from the left labeled "Accounts and Import"
  5. In the third group down from the top, labeled "Send Mail As:", Click on "Send Mail from another address"
  6. In the popup window that appears, type your OET email address in the lower text box, consider putting a descriptive name such as "OET" in the top and click "Next Step"
  7. In the next panel, click next step again, accepting the first/easy option. It will take additional configuration for us to use the "profsssional" option if it is determined that we want to do that (It's a vanity choice. Typically only outlook users will know that we are using gmail to send OET mail).
  8. In the next panel, click "send verification"
  9. In the next panel you can either enter the verification code you will receive from google, or you can have the verification email resent. In my case, my spam filter discarded the gmail verification as spam (unsolicited email) so I had to disable my spam filters, resend from this panel, verify and then restart my spam filters.
  10. Complete the verification step, either by clicking on the link in the confirmation email or by copying the verification code into the last panel and clicking "verify".
  11. Close the popup window, returning to the settings page.
  12. I had to click on the first tab, labeled "General", scroll to the bottom of that tab, find the "Save Changes" button and click it. (Bad design, IMHO).

From now on, when you compose email there will be a "change" link to the right of the "From" label. Clicking on that link changes the From "label" control to a From "drop down" control. Drop it down and click on your OET email address to send mail as OET.com.

On my email client, it defaults to sending from the account that the mail I am replying to is coming from. That means there is no effort to effort to reply as OET, to mail addressed to OET. You only have to remember to send from OET when you are composing a brand new email or when forwarding mail that was not originally addressed to OET. I don't yet know if google is smart enough to do that. I don't use google and have not had time to set up a test.
